Shoring Primary Load Bearing Piers
Project Overview:

Phased replacement of deteriorated load-bearing piers and temporary shoring of the spandrel beams they support in a century-old six-story multi-family building, involving detailed load path analysis and a tightly designed shoring system that maintained continuous tenant and pedestrian access within a constrained courtyard.

Project Highlights:
  • Engineered a multi-level shoring system from street to subcellar to safely transfer spandrel beam loads during pier replacement.
  • Designed a lightweight yet high-capacity shoring layout to accommodate tight site conditions and continuous tenant access.
  • Executed phased removal and replacement of existing piers while shoring the spandrel beams above to maintain structural stability throughout construction.
  • Utilized heavy-duty shores and wide flange members for efficient load support with minimal equipment.
  • Monitored shoring performance throughout the project to ensure safety and successful completion.
Project Experience:

This project demonstrates our ability to execute complex structural stabilization in occupied, space-constrained buildings without compromising safety or access. The work required precise load path analysis, careful sequencing, and close coordination in the field to ensure continuous support of the spandrel beams during phased pier removal and replacement.

Operating within a tight courtyard with no access for heavy equipment, our team developed and implemented a highly efficient shoring system that balanced strength with constructability. Through disciplined monitoring and execution, the project was completed safely, with minimal disruption to residents and full restoration of the building’s structural integrity.

Project Outcome:

Successfully stabilized and repaired a structurally compromised building while maintaining full tenant access through a highly constrained site, overcoming limited space, restricted equipment use, and the complexity of continuous multi-level shoring.
